Norfolk & Western Info

1896 Equipment Inventory

The Norfolk & Western Railway completed an inventory and appraisal of equipment owned by the railroad. The report, as of October 1, 1896, was issued on December 23, 1896, and certified by the superintendents of transportation and motive power.

The report shows the date built, the builder, class, type, cost when new, the age of the equipment as of October 1, 1896, and the depreciated value. It showed what equipment was covered by several mortgages and car trusts. For engines and passenger cars, it gives a breakdown by class. For freight cars, it gives a breakdown by capacity, type, and number of cars.

The entire 43-page report is available as a PDF.

The report was converted to OCR output. The results were cleaned up, formatted, and the steam, passenger car, and freight car rosters were loaded into a database. Because the OCR conversion from PDF to text isn't perfect, there may be errors introduced in some of the numbers, typically with type-overs and confusion between 5 and 6 and other numbers. The list can be viewed in various ways via the selections below.
